Do Caravans Need an MOT?

A towed touring caravan does not need an MOT. Trailers and caravans are not part of the MOT scheme in the UK, so there is no annual test for the caravan itself. A motorhome is different, since it is a motor vehicle in its own right and does need an MOT.

The key distinction is whether the unit has its own engine. A caravan is towed by another vehicle, so it is treated as a trailer and falls outside the test. This does not mean a caravan can be neglected. Even without a test, the law expects a towed caravan to be safe on the road, so the responsibility to keep it roadworthy sits firmly with the owner. The vehicle towing it must also be fully legal, with a valid MOT of its own.

Why the Towing Vehicle Must Be Tested

The caravan may be exempt, though the vehicle towing it is not. The car or van pulling a caravan must be taxed, insured and hold a valid MOT just like any other journey. Towing puts extra strain on the tow car, so its brakes, tyres and suspension matter even more than usual.

How a Motorhome MOT Works

A motorhome is where the rules flip, since it drives itself rather than being towed. That makes it a motor vehicle, so it needs an MOT just like a car or van. A motor caravan up to 3,000kg is tested as a Class 4 vehicle, with the first test at three years old and then every year after that.

A larger, heavier motorhome above 3,000kg moves up to a Class 7 test, so not every garage will be equipped for the biggest models.
